Measurement facilities

The Detectability and Electronic Warfare Laboratory is equipped with an anechoic chamber for electromagnetic tests that supports its activities and research projects. The dimensions are 3 x 7 x 3 m and the floor, walls and ceiling are covered with absorbing material. It works from 1 to 40 GHz.

This facility has been recently transformed to include a novel spherical bi-static system that increases the measurement capabilities: BIANCHA (Bistatic Anechoic Chamber). This new system can work from 5.5 to 26.5 GHz and has been devised in such a way that any bi-static angle can be established between the centre of an imaginary hemisphere and two probes, held by two independent arms.

Some of the applications of this new system are:

  • Mono- and bi-static RCS measurement of small targets.
  • Materials characterization (permittivity and permeability estimation).
  • Absorption measurements.
  • Measurement of the effect of materials, covers and radomes on the radiation of antennas or the scattering of targets.
  • Research in near-field measurement techniques.
